Doberman progress!

At three years and two months old, my beautiful, affectionate and dominant male Dobie is beginning to exercise some of his training without being commanded.

Can I have a big cheer? At 90 pounds it's a real gift. Lemme tell ya.

This breakthrough might not seem like a big deal to most folks, but to you who also have large, very high energy dogs ... you understand.

There is a reward that he gets when he comes in from the yard and calmly moves through the house. As opposed to behaving like a tornado. A reward that he very much expects and marches directly to the kitchen to get.

So, yesterday morning I pull the biscuit out of the high cupboard and he sits! Without being commanded. I was stunned.

Don't get me wrong, he's very obedient, but nothing-and I mean nothing is automatic for him. He complies, but must be given a command. Until that moment yesterday.

I thought it might be a fluke, but this morning when I produced his breakfast (an apple-his favorite), low-and-behold, he sat.

I think this is a moment to mark on the calender. Or, ...er blog about!
